
Unfortunately, until somewhat recently the skin safety component of this common, popular cosmetic procedure hasn’t been researched all that much. But, slowly, that is thankfully starting to change. According to a study referenced in the Glamour Magazine article cited below, the amount of UV rays given by gel manicures curing lamps can differ significantly from salon to salon.

The piece quotes board-certified dermatologist Chris G. Adigun, M.D., who makes two very important points here: “UVA irradiance or strength emitted by nail lamps whether fluorescent or LED is at least four times stronger than UVA from normal sunlight. Do we have data that this causes cancer? No. But do we know that UVA exposure causes cancer? Yes.” We’re not doctors here, of course. But this doesn’t sound like she’s making it all that difficult to connect the dots.
The article also puts forth a separate excellent point. Skin cancer and Melanoma aside, UV rays are also the cause of most other, less dangerous skin damage. And as getting one’s nails done is typically a small vanity project, those who opt for gel manicures should bear this in mind: the cost for making your nails look great may well be the premature aging of the skin on your hands. Is it worth it? That is not for us to decide.
However, in the medical community research begets more research. So as time goes by we’ll be sure to hear more about any tangible connections between gel manicures and skin cancer. And when we do, so will you too.
