Sun and Skin: A Potentially Unhealthy Combination

Sun and Skin an unhealthy relationship

The most important thing you can do for yourself while outdoors is protect your skin from sunburn. It’s not hard to be sun safe but it does require some planning. Many people are conscientious about skin protection especially when it comes down to protecting their children at the beach or at a swimming pool but, but can be careless when kids play in outdoor sports or other recreations.  The fact is, the Sun’s and Skin are not a happy marriage. Sun protection should be practiced at all times, even on cloudy days.

Sunburn is a painful reminder that we ignored to planning ahead.

The unfortunate part is that even though sunburned skin will heal on the surface, the damage it can leave behind could be life changing.  Keep in mind that children have tender skin and one bad burn can pave the way to irreversible skin damage later in life.

The long term impact of too much uv skin exposure can be life altering.  Many adults who endure skin cancer or Melanoma could have been sunburned in their childhood. Studies have proved that  one or two blistering sunburns in childhood can greatly increase the risk of developing skin cancer in adulthood.  Although skin cancer is the most common kind of cancer in the United States, some types can be deadly.

Protecting yourself is simple. The basic sun skin protection steps include using sunscreen, wearing hats and other protective clothing, sunglasses and limiting exposure time. Sundicators sunscreen reminder wristbands are the perfect outdoor companion to remind you when it is time to re-apply SPF.  Also, Avoiding the hours when the sun’s rays are strongest, 10 A.M. to 4 P.M., is a good idea, but not always practical. If you are forced to be outdoors during these times, try to find shade under a tree.

We have included some of our favorite educational videos that highlight the importance of skin protection and preventing sun damage from happening in the first place.

The history we have with the sun stays on our skin for our entire lives. Whether it is for health reasons, or vanity, please protect yourself while in the sun winter, spring, summer and fall!
