Vitamin D Confusion: To Sun, or Not Sun?

Vitamin D and your skincare

That Is The Sun Safe Question

It’s a conundrum that has plagued mankind since the dawn of time. Okay, maybe it hasn’t been quite that long, but it’s still a conundrum nevertheless. How does one protect oneself from sun skin damage caused by the sun’s harmful UV rays, while still allowing oneself to absorb at least the minimum amount of Vitamin D; of which the sun is a great, and actually the primary, supplier?

At issue is that sunblock has been designed to prevent the sun’s rays from penetrating the wearer’s skin, thereby drastically reducing the chances of suffering from premature aging, sunspots, wrinkles or, even worse, Melanoma and skin cancer. But in doing so it also prohibits, almost completely, the skin’s ability to take in that key vitamin. So what’s the answer?

According to an article posted by Skin Inc,, a new sunscreen has been developed that allows those who use it to not only get the crucial sun protection the product was designed for, but that also allows for a decent percentage of Vitamin D to get through.* The article further states that this sunscreen is at present for sale in Australia, (which makes sense, because both that country and New Zealand rank first and second of places in the world where skin cancer is the most prevalent) and that it should be ready for sale in these United States later on this year. (2016)*

While there are numerous foods we might add to our diets that can help get Vitamin D into our bodies, (a quick internet search will give you a list) the sun is still the best source for it. But the risk of skin cancer is still too great to go out in it unprotected. So keep an eye out for this new sunscreen to hit our market shortly. And keep your eyes glued to this blog, as we’ll trumpet its arrival as soon as we’re aware.
