Man-Handling: Proper Skincare Requirements For Men

Man-handling

Here at Pretty Pale, we’ve stressed many times that skin cancer and Melanoma play no favorites when it comes to gender, race or age. And while that remains very true, it’s also important to note that, physiologically-speaking at least, men and women are not created equal.  So to be more specific, we’re referring to the difference in protecting men’s skin versus women’s through the use of various skin care products. Let us do the Man-Handling for you in this post.

Testosterone causes the skin of a male to be tougher for topical products to penetrate than that of a female. Therefore, some need to be created with a higher concentration of ingredients in order to provide them with enough potency to be effective for men.  We mention this because perhaps in a rush, (or out of necessity) some couples might interchangeably use products that are made for the other gender. Often times this isn’t an issue at all. For instance, in a pinch if a woman uses a man’s shaving cream, or a man uses a women’s deodorant, who really cares?

However, if a man uses a woman’s skin care product in an effort to protect himself from the sun, and that product isn’t formulated for him, it may become a skin health issue. And then we care.   The daily practice of sun-safety precautions is essential. But it’s also key that men make certain that what they’re using to do so is truly strong enough to be effective for them. Thinking you’re protected from sun skin damage caused by UV rays when you’re not isn’t any better than not protecting yourself at all.

So, just as you would on other products, prescriptions, food packaging and the like, all we ask of men is that before buying or borrowing skin care products, please check the labels before partaking  in  Man-Handling. Thank you!
